Michelle Obama says she has reached a stage in life where she feels comfortable making decisions based on her own priorities. Speaking on NPR’s Wild Card podcast with Rachel Martin, the 61-year-old former First Lady explained that she no longer feels obligated to meet every public expectation. Instead, she is focusing on authenticity and personal choice.

Handling public criticism
Some of Obama’s recent decisions, such as not attending President Donald Trump’s inauguration or the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, attracted attention and criticism. She acknowledged these reactions but said she is choosing to focus on what feels right for her. As she explained, “Let me define what I want to do, apart from what the world expects of me.”

Responding to rumors
Obama also addressed speculation about her marriage to former President Barack Obama. With humor, she dismissed rumors suggesting problems in their relationship. She joked that the couple is “too old for Instagram,” explaining that a lack of shared photos online does not reflect the state of their marriage.

Reflecting on past responsibilities
Looking back, Obama said her personal ambitions were often secondary while she focused on raising her daughters and supporting her husband’s political career. As a working mother and First Lady, she prioritized family and teamwork rather than pursuing individual goals.

A new chapter and message
Now, she says she is entering a phase of life where she wants to spend her time more intentionally. Thinking about how many summers remain has made her more mindful of her choices. Her goal is to enjoy meaningful moments with loved ones and live with purpose. Through this approach, she hopes to show others that it is never too late to focus on what truly matters.
