The disappearance of Larry Ely Murillo-Moncada puzzled residents of Council Bluffs, Iowa for nearly a decade. The 25-year-old vanished in 2009 during a winter storm, leaving investigators and his family searching for answers. For years, the case remained unresolved until an unexpected discovery in 2019 finally revealed what likely happened.
On November 28, 2009, Murillo-Moncada reportedly ran barefoot out of his home after returning from a Thanksgiving shift at a local grocery store. According to his mother, he appeared frightened and believed someone was following him. When he did not return, his family reported him missing the next day. Police and volunteers searched the area and distributed flyers, but no clear leads were found.
As time passed, the investigation slowed and the case remained a mystery. Nearly ten years later, contractors working inside a former No Frills Supermarket made a disturbing discovery while dismantling equipment. Human remains were found behind a large refrigeration unit inside the building.
Authorities soon suspected the remains might belong to Murillo-Moncada. DNA testing later confirmed his identity. Investigators concluded he had likely returned to the store after leaving home that night.
According to investigators, he may have climbed onto one of the store’s large coolers and accidentally fallen into a narrow space between the refrigeration unit and the wall. The drop, about 12 feet, left him trapped where escape was almost impossible. Officials also noted that the loud refrigeration system may have prevented anyone from hearing calls for help.
An autopsy found no signs of trauma, and authorities determined his death was a tragic accident. The discovery finally solved a mystery that had left his family searching for answers for nearly ten years.
