A Bus Ride Toward a New Reality
A prison bus rolled along the highway under a gray sky, carrying three men to the same prison but with different regrets. The vehicle rattled and the air smelled of diesel and stale coffee. None of them spoke at first. Their past lives were now behind them, and the future meant steel doors and strict routines. As part of intake, each prisoner had been allowed one small personal item to help pass the time in a place where days move slowly.
Small Items, Big Meaning
Eventually, the silence broke. One man asked the others what they had brought with them. The older man showed a small box filled with paints and brushes. “Paints,” he said proudly. “If I’ve got to be here, I might as well make something out of it.”
Another man revealed a deck of cards and smiled. “Cards,” he said. “A hundred games. And I’ll have time for every one.”
An Unexpected Choice
The third man had been quietly smiling the whole time. When asked about his item, he held up a pack of vitamin gummies. The others looked confused. “Seriously?” one of them asked. The man simply tapped the package and replied, “According to the label… they support energy, mood, confidence, and a better life.” The bus filled with laughter.
Life Inside the Prison
Prison life quickly turned into the same routine every day. Humor became one of the few ways to cope. Over time, the inmates even began numbering their jokes so they wouldn’t have to repeat them entirely.
The Joke That No One Knew
One evening someone shouted, “Number twelve!” and everyone laughed. Later another inmate yelled, “Number four!” and the laughter returned. Curious, a new prisoner tried it himself and shouted, “Number twenty-nine!” The room erupted with laughter louder than before. When he asked why it was so funny, his cellmate replied, “We’d never heard that one before.”
