Here’s why you should always leave an upturned glass and a piece of paper in the sink before going on vacation 2

A surprisingly effective method is covering the sink drain with a paper towel and placing an upside-down glass over it. This creates a simple barrier that helps block odors, sewer gases, and insects from coming through the pipes. Unlike some sink stoppers that may loosen, warp, or lose their seal over time, an upside-down glass remains stable and requires no special fitting.

Before covering the drain, it is helpful to prepare the sink properly. Start by cleaning the basin and removing any leftover food, soap residue, or buildup. Pouring hot white vinegar down the drain can help break down deposits and reduce unwanted smells. After letting it sit for a few hours, rinse with warm water and wipe the sink dry.

For an extra fresh scent, rubbing a lemon wedge around the drain area can leave a pleasant smell before you leave. Once everything is clean and completely dry, place the paper towel over the drain opening and position the upside-down glass on top. The setup is simple but effective.

This small preparation step can make a noticeable difference when returning home after a trip. Instead of walking into a house filled with stale odors or discovering unwanted pests, you can come back to a cleaner, fresher space. While it takes only a few minutes before leaving, protecting your sink is one of those simple habits that can make your return home much more comfortable.
