Why Putting a Bay Leaf in Your Mop Bucket Might Be Worth Trying

Cleaning the floors may not be the most enjoyable chore, but a small household trick can make the experience more pleasant. Adding a few dried bay leaves to your mop water can give your home a mild, fresh herbal scent without costing much or requiring extra effort. Bay leaves are not a substitute for floor cleaner or disinfectant, but they can be used as a simple aromatic addition to your usual cleaning routine.

Bay leaves have a naturally warm, herbal, slightly spicy fragrance. When placed in warm water, some of their aromatic compounds are released, creating a gentle scent. “That’s the main reason people use them in this household hack.” However, the leaves do not make cleaning products stronger or provide proper disinfection, so regular floor cleaners should still be used when needed.

To try the trick, fill a bucket with warm water and add two or three dried bay leaves. Let them sit for several minutes so their aroma can spread through the water. For a stronger scent, you can gently break one leaf before adding it. Then add your normal floor cleaner if it is suitable for your type of flooring, following the product instructions carefully.

Once the bay leaves have infused the water, simply mop your floor according to its care instructions. There is no need to change your normal cleaning method. When finished, throw away the dirty water and remove the bay leaves before washing and storing your bucket and mop.

Bay leaves can make your cleaning routine smell nicer, but they do not actually clean floors in the same way as a formulated cleaning product. “Not in the way a formulated cleaning product does.” For grease, stains, heavy dirt, or disinfection, always rely on a suitable floor-cleaning product rather than the bay leaves alone.
