My grandpa taught me this trick to kill driveway weeds with 0 effort. Here’s how it works

Weeds growing through driveway cracks can be frustrating, especially when they keep coming back after commercial treatments. A simple method shared by my grandpa offers an inexpensive alternative using ingredients many people already have at home. His approach combines white vinegar, salt, and dish soap to create a solution designed to dry out unwanted plants.

The recipe is simple: mix one gallon of white vinegar with one cup of table salt and one tablespoon of dish soap. The vinegar contains acetic acid, which removes moisture from the weeds, while salt further disrupts their ability to absorb water. The dish soap helps the mixture stick to the leaves, allowing it to work more effectively. As the original article puts it, “The beauty of this method lies in its simplicity and accessibility.”

Driveway weeds can be difficult to control because they grow in tiny cracks where soil and moisture are limited. To use the mixture, dissolve the salt in the vinegar, add the dish soap, and transfer everything to a spray bottle or garden sprayer. Apply it directly to the weeds on a dry, sunny day, avoiding nearby plants and unnecessary saturation of the surrounding soil.

Results may appear within a few hours, although tougher weeds can take a day or two. Deep-rooted growth may require another application. Avoid spraying before rain, on windy days, or near areas where children and pets play until the solution has dried.

The method is inexpensive and easy to repeat during the growing season. However, it may be less effective against large, deeply rooted perennial weeds, which can require manual removal or another treatment. Regularly checking driveway cracks and treating new growth early can make weed control much easier.
