Why Baggage Handlers Say You Should Never Tie a Ribbon to Your Suitcase

Travelers often tie colorful ribbons to their suitcases so they can spot their bags more easily at baggage claim. However, airport staff warn that this simple trick can create problems during the baggage-handling process. Modern airports depend on automated scanning systems that read baggage tags as luggage moves through conveyor belts and sorting machines. A ribbon hanging near the tag can cover part of the label or make it harder for scanners to read.

When a tag cannot be scanned correctly, the suitcase may have to be handled manually. This can slow down the process and potentially increase the chance of a bag being delayed or missing a connecting flight. As airport systems become increasingly automated, anything that interferes with the barcode or baggage tag can create unnecessary complications.

Loose ribbons can also cause physical problems. They may become caught in conveyor belts, rollers, or sorting equipment, forcing staff to stop the system and remove the obstruction. Handlers also warn that ribbons can flip over baggage tags or become tangled with other luggage, which could increase the risk of a suitcase being sent to the wrong destination.

Airport systems do not identify luggage by its appearance. Instead, they rely on **barcode scans and digital records** to track each suitcase throughout its journey. That means a colorful ribbon is not necessary for the airport’s tracking system and may actually make handling more difficult.

For travelers who want their bags to stand out, experts recommend safer options such as distinctive suitcase covers, sturdy luggage straps, or secure identification tags that do not hang loosely. While ribbons may seem like a convenient way to recognize your luggage, they can sometimes cause more problems than they solve in today’s automated airports.
