Little-known mistakes and bloopers in Petticoat Junction

Few classic sitcoms have the cozy charm of *Petticoat Junction*. Premiering in 1963, the series followed Kate Bradley and her three daughters at the Shady Rest Hotel in fictional Hooterville. It ran for seven seasons and 222 episodes, becoming a beloved part of American television. Behind the humor, however, the show had plenty of unusual production stories, continuity mistakes, romances, and memorable cast connections.

One of the show’s most recognizable features was the Hooterville Cannonball, although its details were not always consistent. Different trains and filming methods were used, and its number changed from “3” to “8” when the series moved from black and white to color. Another mistake appeared in the opening credits, which continued showing Gunilla Hutton as Billie Jo even after Meredith MacRae had taken over the role.

The cast also had some surprising real-life connections. Linda Kaye Henning and Mike Minor, who played Betty Jo and Steve, fell in love off-screen and married only months after their characters did. Sharon Tate was reportedly considered for Billie Jo before Jeannine Riley got the part. Edgar Buchanan, meanwhile, appeared in all 222 episodes as the lazy Uncle Joe.

Even the show’s dog had an impressive career. Higgins, usually called “Dog” on the sitcom, appeared in 152 episodes before becoming famous as Benji in the 1974 movie.

Behind the cheerful world of Hooterville was also tragedy. Bea Benaderet, who played Kate Bradley, developed lung cancer and eventually left the series. She died in 1968 at age 62, and her husband Eugene Twombly died just four days later. *Petticoat Junction* ended in 1970 during television’s “rural purge,” but its characters, romances, mistakes, and unforgettable Cannonball continue to make it a cherished piece of classic television history.
