The Kitchen Habit Many People Overlook: Why Keeping a Towel on the Oven Door Matters

There is something comforting about a busy kitchen, but small habits can sometimes create unnecessary safety risks. One common habit is hanging a tea towel over the oven door handle because it is convenient. However, towels should always be kept away from hot appliances, burners, flames, grease, and hot cookware.

An oven or stovetop can become extremely hot during normal cooking. A towel hanging against it may gradually heat up, while loose fabric can catch on clothing, cookware, or someone walking past. If that happens while carrying a hot pan, it could cause a dangerous spill or dropped dish.

The safest solution is simple: keep towels away from active cooking surfaces. Give them a designated spot, such as a sturdy hook on the side of a cabinet or another cool area. This keeps them accessible without exposing them to unnecessary heat.

You can also keep a clean, folded towel on a safe nearby counter and replace it regularly. An apron with a pocket can provide another convenient option. The important thing is to avoid leaving loose fabric near burners, oven doors, or other sources of heat.

For an easy family appetizer, try slow-cooker meatballs. Combine 32 ounces of frozen meatballs with 12 ounces each of grape jelly and chili sauce. Cook according to the meatball package and slow-cooker instructions, making sure the meatballs are heated thoroughly before serving.

For a different flavor, substitute cranberry sauce or apricot preserves for the grape jelly. These simple ingredients make an easy appetizer for gatherings without requiring much preparation or attention.

Small changes can make a kitchen safer and more organized. A towel may seem harmless hanging from an oven handle, but keeping it away from heat reduces the chance of accidents and makes the cooking area less cluttered.

The next time you reach for a tea towel, pause before placing it over the oven handle. Choose a cool, designated spot instead. A few seconds of extra effort can help prevent an unnecessary kitchen accident.
