Which Side of the Fence Should Face Your Neighbor? Here’s What I Learned Before Building Mine

When I first decided to install a fence in my backyard, I assumed it would be simple. But I quickly kept hearing the same advice: **“Make sure the finished side faces your neighbor.”** The finished side is the clean, attractive side without visible posts and rails, while the unfinished side shows the fence’s supporting framework. This traditional setup is often considered more respectful because your neighbor gets the better-looking view.

However, this is not necessarily a legal requirement. In many places, there is no universal law saying the finished side must face the neighbor. Instead, it is often a matter of etiquette and tradition. Historically, homeowners placed the nicer side outward as a gesture of courtesy. Still, some cities, neighborhoods, or homeowners’ associations may have specific rules, especially when a fence borders a sidewalk or street.

Property ownership can also make a difference. If the fence sits entirely inside your property line, you generally have more control over its design and orientation. But if it sits directly on the boundary between two properties, the situation can become more complicated. Shared fences may involve joint decisions about construction, maintenance, and repairs, making communication with your neighbor especially important.

There are also practical reasons why the finished side may not face outward. A **“good neighbor fence”** can look identical from both sides, while certain designs place rails inside for security. Sloped yards, trees, sheds, sunlight, airflow, and other property conditions can also affect how a fence is installed.

Before building, it’s smart to check local rules, confirm your property boundaries, and talk with your neighbor. I learned that the advice about facing the finished side outward was often more about courtesy than obligation. **“I respect the space we share.”** Ultimately, the best choice depends on local regulations, the property, and what works fairly for everyone involved.
