Never Leave Your Charger Plugged In Without Your Phone Attached and Why That Small Habit Can Protect Your Home

A charger left plugged into the wall may seem harmless, especially when nothing is connected to it. However, many adapters still use a small amount of electricity while idle, and that can create some heat over time. With a quality, undamaged charger, the risk is usually low, but old, counterfeit, or damaged adapters can become dangerous if they overheat or develop electrical faults.

Where you leave the charger is also important. Keeping an adapter under a pillow, blanket, clothing, or bedding can trap heat and prevent proper ventilation. Chargers should instead be placed on a hard, open surface where heat can escape easily.

Pay attention to warning signs that indicate a charger may be unsafe. If it becomes unusually hot, makes buzzing or crackling noises, smells like melting plastic, shows discoloration, or has a damaged cable, unplug it immediately and replace it. Never continue using a charger simply because it still appears to work.

Unplugging chargers when they are not needed can also reduce unnecessary electricity use. While one adapter consumes very little power, several chargers left plugged in continuously can add up. Disconnecting them also means the adapters spend less time exposed to electrical stress and unexpected voltage events.

The safest habit is simple: charge your device, then unplug the adapter when practical. Keep chargers away from blankets and pillows, avoid overloaded outlets, and inspect them regularly. As the article warns, “don’t take chances—unplug it and replace it with a reputable, safety-certified model.” A few seconds at the outlet could help prevent a much bigger problem.
