Panty liners are commonly used for comfort and hygiene, but experts warn they may not always be beneficial. A gynecologist advises against frequent use, saying they should be used “sparingly” rather than every day.
Many people rely on panty liners to manage discharge or feel prepared for their period. They can seem like an easy way to stay fresh and avoid discomfort throughout the day.
However, Dr. Nicole Williams explains that daily use can lead to irritation. After seeing a patient who wore them constantly, she said: “No wonder she had discharge, her vagina was irritated and just kind of generally unhappy.” She also points out that liners often contain a “plastic-y kind of substance,” adding: “Now, can your vagina breathe through a plastic-y kind of substance? Nope. She can’t.”
Other experts note that panty liners can cause friction, redness, and itching, especially if they are scented or made with non-breathable materials. Reduced airflow can trap moisture, making irritation more likely.
Dr. Williams concludes: “So these are to be used sparingly… But please, no panty liners on a daily basis or your vagina will be so annoyed.” While opinions differ, the key takeaway is to use them in moderation and prioritize comfort and proper airflow.
