Why Washing New Bed Sheets Before Sleeping Could Make Your Bed Cleaner

There is something satisfying about opening a brand-new set of bed sheets. They look clean, crisp, and perfectly folded, but “unused” does not necessarily mean “freshly cleaned.” Before reaching your bedroom, sheets can pass through factories, warehouses, shipping facilities, stores, and packaging areas, where they may collect dust, fibers, and other particles. Washing them before use is a simple way to give your bedding a genuinely clean start.

During manufacturing, sheets may be treated with finishing agents, dyes, sizing materials, and other substances that help make the fabric look smooth and attractive. Some of these residues can remain on the material, along with loose fibers and dust. A first wash can remove much of this buildup while also making the fabric softer and more comfortable. The crisp feeling of new sheets can partly come from these finishing treatments, so washing allows the fibers to relax naturally.

This step may be especially useful for people with sensitive skin. Even if they look perfectly clean, they may have picked up dust and particles along the way. Washing also helps remove the familiar “new” smell, which does not necessarily mean the bedding is hygienically clean.
