What I Said When Tomás Asked How I Would Like To Handle It, And The Conversation My Sister And I Had Three Weeks Later

The narrator calmly paid the restaurant bill from the house account, explaining that the dinner was a gift to Coralie. The revelation shocked Garrett, Vivienne, and the narrator’s mother, while Coralie finally seemed to understand the truth about her parent. There was no need for a long explanation. The receipt revealed more than words could, showing the connection between the narrator, the restaurant, and the years of sacrifice behind it.

Three weeks later, Coralie asked to meet privately at the restaurant. Over coffee, she asked the narrator to tell her everything, beginning with Dad’s death. This time, she listened without interrupting. She admitted that she had misunderstood the narrator’s earlier message and had not realized what she was accepting with a simple thumbs-up. The narrator believed her because Coralie had never deliberately tried to hurt anyone. Still, her carelessness had created a painful wound that could not easily be repaired.

Coralie later told Garrett the truth about the narrator and the restaurant. Garrett became more careful and respectful, even though he remained distant. Vivienne also changed. When she called to arrange the rehearsal dinner, she specifically asked for the owner and, after being connected to the narrator, booked the event without trying to negotiate the price.

Despite these changes, the relationship between Coralie and the narrator remained uncertain. They were no longer as close as they had been before Dad died, and the narrator could not know whether that closeness would ever return. Some damage takes time to heal, especially when trust has been shaken.

Then Coralie returned to the restaurant simply to eat. She did not ask for favors or special treatment. She sat at a table, carefully read the menu, and reached for the check before the narrator could stop her. This time, the narrator let her pay. It was a small gesture, but it felt like something important: perhaps the first quiet step toward reconciliation.
