Which Side of the Fence Must Face the Neighbor?

When installing a new fence, one common question is which side should face the neighbor: the smooth, finished side or the side showing posts and rails? Many people assume the “good side” must always face outward, but there is no universal rule. The answer can depend on the fence design, property boundaries, local regulations, neighborhood agreements, and installation instructions.

Traditional wood fences usually have two different sides. The finished side has a cleaner appearance, with the boards creating a more continuous surface. The other side exposes posts, horizontal rails, brackets, and other structural elements. However, this does not mean the fence was installed incorrectly. **“It isn’t necessarily unfinished in the sense that something went wrong.”** It is simply the side where more of the construction is visible.

The difference comes from how traditional fences are built. Posts and rails form the supporting framework, while boards or pickets are attached to them. Depending on the design, those structural parts will naturally be more visible from one side. Some fences are deliberately installed with the finished side facing the street or a neighbor, while others may use a design that looks similar from both directions.

A good-neighbor fence can solve this issue by providing an attractive appearance on both sides. This makes it a popular option for fences positioned directly between neighboring properties because neither homeowner is left with a clearly less attractive side.

So, should the finished side always face the neighbor? **“No—not universally.”** It may be considered polite to give the neighbor the more attractive side, but that does not automatically make it a legal requirement. Local laws, zoning rules, HOA regulations, property agreements, and ownership arrangements can all affect how a fence should be installed. Before building, it is best to check the rules that apply to your property.
