I Handed My Pregnant Neighbor $200 When She Was Desperate — I Never Expected It Would Turn My Marriage Upside Down

Just after sunset, my pregnant neighbor arrived at my door in tears. Although we had never been close, I welcomed her and helped her sit on the porch. She could barely speak through her sobs, but eventually explained that her fiancé had left her that afternoon, abandoning her and their unborn baby. With no family nearby and nobody else to turn to, she had come to us hoping for comfort.

My husband, however, showed no sympathy. “Some women are born to be burdens. Tell this drama queen to go cry somewhere else.” Shocked by his cruelty, I told him to go inside. I stayed with my neighbor, listened to her fears about becoming a single mother, and reminded her that she wasn’t alone. Before she left, I gave her two hundred dollars from the grocery and gas money I had saved. It wasn’t much, but I hoped it would help her through a difficult time.

She cried again, this time with relief, and thanked me before heading home. I thought about her for days, hoping she would find the strength to rebuild her life. A month later, my husband suddenly called me to the window. A black luxury car had stopped outside, and a driver opened the door for my neighbor. She stepped out looking elegant, confident, and completely different from the heartbroken woman who had visited us.

She came to my door carrying an envelope containing the same two hundred dollars. “I didn’t need the money,” she explained. “But your kindness saved me when I felt worthless.” She also gave me a velvet box containing a beautiful necklace. My husband mocked her afterward, calling her a rich charity girl, but I barely listened. His reaction made me question our marriage and realize how little kindness I had received from him. For the first time, I seriously considered divorce and wondered why I had tolerated so much cruelty for so long.
