The Real Deal on Covering Your Sink Before Vacation

Preparing for a vacation involves packing, arranging transportation, and making sure your home is safe while you’re away. However, one small task you might overlook is covering your sink before leaving. Although this trick is sometimes recommended to prevent bad smells and keep insects away, **covering your sink is optional rather than essential.** Cleaning the basin, removing food scraps, and checking for leaks are more important steps to keep your home fresh and protected.

Kitchen and bathroom drains can collect grease, soap residue, and food particles that cause unpleasant odors. Covering the drain may temporarily reduce smells or block some insects from entering through the opening, but it won’t eliminate the buildup causing the problem. Most sinks have a P-trap that holds water to prevent sewer gases from entering the home. For a typical short vacation, this water seal should remain effective, although rarely used drains may need attention before a longer absence.

Before leaving, wash your sink thoroughly, remove food waste, clean the drain strainer, and wipe the basin dry. Check the faucet and the pipes underneath for dripping water or signs of leaks, since even a small plumbing problem can cause damage while nobody is home. Avoid pouring unnecessary chemicals down the drain, and never mix cleaning products such as bleach, vinegar, or ammonia. If your sink already has a persistent sewer-like smell, investigate the cause instead of simply covering the opening.

If you want extra protection, use a clean, removable cover to keep dust and debris out of the basin. A suitable drain stopper may also temporarily block the opening, but neither option guarantees that insects or odors will stay away. Before a longer trip, consider checking other rarely used drains and whether shutting off the main water supply is appropriate for your home.

**Ultimately, covering your sink before vacation is a personal choice, not a necessary household rule.** A clean sink, functioning plumbing, and a careful leak inspection will generally provide more meaningful protection than a cover alone.
