Can You Shower While the Washing Machine Is Running?

You can usually take a shower while the washing machine is running, as long as your home’s plumbing and electrical systems are properly installed and working correctly. Both appliances can operate at the same time, but using them together may affect your water pressure or temperature, depending on your plumbing and water heater.

One common issue is that your shower may suddenly become cooler when the washing machine draws hot water. This is more likely with traditional water heaters that store a limited amount of hot water or systems that struggle to meet several demands at once. You might also notice weaker water pressure while the washing machine fills, especially in older homes with limited water supply capacity.

The type of washing machine also matters. Front-loading and high-efficiency models generally use less water than traditional top-loading machines, while some washers heat water internally instead of relying entirely on the household hot-water supply. However, your plumbing system and water heater capacity are just as important as the appliance itself.

Under normal conditions, running both appliances should not damage your plumbing. However, repeated pressure drops, sudden temperature changes, loud banging pipes, or water leaks may indicate an underlying problem. If you notice electrical shocks or water leaking near electrical equipment, stop using the affected appliances and seek professional assistance.

If your shower frequently turns cold or loses pressure when the washing machine fills, consider showering before starting the laundry or waiting until the filling stage is complete. A plumber can also inspect your pipes, valves, and water pressure if the problem continues.

The bottom line: For most households, showering while the washing machine runs is perfectly fine. If your water temperature and pressure remain stable, there is generally no reason to change your routine.
