Why People Aren’t Using Top Sheets On Beds Anymore

For years, using a top sheet was considered a normal part of making a bed. It was placed between the fitted sheet and the blanket or comforter, providing an extra layer of protection. However, more people are now choosing to skip it, preferring a simpler bedding arrangement that saves time and feels more comfortable.

One major reason is convenience. Without a top sheet, making the bed becomes easier because there is one less layer to straighten, tuck in, and arrange. Some people also find that flat sheets become tangled around their legs during the night or get pushed toward the foot of the bed. For restless sleepers, removing this extra layer can make bedtime more comfortable and less frustrating.

Another reason is the growing popularity of duvet covers. These washable covers surround comforters and can be removed and cleaned separately, making an additional flat sheet seem unnecessary. Others simply prefer sleeping with fewer layers, especially if they tend to get hot during the night. A fitted sheet and lightweight comforter may be all they need.

Skipping the top sheet can also reduce laundry. With fewer bedding items to wash, fold, and put back on the bed, household chores become slightly easier. However, many people still appreciate top sheets because they are easy to wash, provide extra warmth, and create a comfortable barrier between the sleeper and heavier bedding.

Ultimately, there is no single correct way to make a bed. The best arrangement depends on personal comfort, sleeping temperature, and washing preferences. Those who enjoy using a top sheet have no reason to stop, while anyone tired of tangled sheets and extra laundry can comfortably leave it out. Fewer layers may simply mean less work and a better night’s sleep.
