Things You Should Never Store Under Your Kitchen Sink

Many people use the cabinet under the kitchen sink as a storage space for cleaners, paper towels, bags, and other random items. While it seems convenient, this area is often damp, warm, and poorly ventilated, making it unsafe for many household products. As the article explains, “that dark, damp cabinet can actually be one of the worst places to keep certain things.”

Strong cleaners like bleach, drain cleaners, oven sprays, and ammonia products should not be stored there because leaks or mixed residues may create harmful fumes. The article warns that “mixing bleach with ammonia produces chloramine gas.” Powdered products such as baking soda or detergents are also affected by moisture, which can turn them into hard clumps, weaken their effectiveness, and cause chemical breakdown over time.

Humidity can damage batteries, causing them to corrode, leak chemicals, overheat, or even short-circuit. Paper towels, cardboard, manuals, and paper bags absorb moisture easily, leading to mold, mildew, bad smells, and pest problems. Food and pet food should also stay away from this cabinet because the warm and humid environment attracts pests and can contaminate packaging, even when it appears sealed.

Medicines, vitamins, and personal care products lose effectiveness when exposed to humidity and temperature changes. Sharp objects like scissors and box cutters are another hidden danger, especially in cluttered spaces where someone may reach in without looking and get injured.

If you continue using the cabinet, keep it organized and minimal. “Keep it visible,” use waterproof containers, and “Never store products where they could leak and mix.” In the end, the article reminds readers that safety sometimes starts with “rethinking what belongs there in the first place.”
