Doctor warns of serious risks linked to ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin

Common painkillers like ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are often used without much thought, but they carry real risks when taken regularly. As the article states, they are “far from harmless when used long term.”

These drugs work by reducing inflammation, but they also weaken the stomach’s protective lining. This can lead to ulcers, internal bleeding, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications. Even though they are easy to buy, they should not be treated casually.

According to Dr. Mark Porter, these medications are responsible for serious health impacts, noting they are “behind around a third of all adverse drug reaction admissions in the NHS.” This highlights how common and dangerous misuse can be.

Certain people face higher risks, including those over 65 or with conditions like ulcers, heart issues, or kidney disease. People taking blood thinners are also more vulnerable. Even small or occasional doses can worsen existing problems, while long-term use increases the danger significantly.

The key takeaway is simple: “never assume over-the-counter means safe.” These medications should be used carefully, with awareness of the risks, and ideally with medical guidance when taken regularly.
