Vertical Nail Ridges: Why They Happen More as You Get Older

Vertical lines on nails can become more noticeable with age, often causing concern. However, these ridges are usually harmless. As the article explains, they are “completely normal” and commonly linked to aging rather than illness.

These lines, known as longitudinal ridges, run from the base of the nail to the tip. Nails are made of keratin, and their smooth appearance depends on steady growth. Over time, the body slows down slightly, which can affect how evenly this material forms.

Aging plays a major role. The nail matrix produces cells less evenly, leading to ridges. At the same time, nails tend to become drier, making these lines more visible. Daily habits like frequent handwashing or using harsh products can also remove natural oils and highlight the ridges.

Other factors may contribute as well. Small nutritional gaps, reduced circulation, or hormonal changes can influence nail texture. Still, these are usually minor and not a cause for concern unless the ridges appear suddenly or come with other symptoms.

Simple care can help improve nail appearance. Moisturizing, protecting hands with gloves, and gentle filing can reduce roughness. Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet also support healthier nail growth.

In most cases, these changes are just a natural part of getting older. Understanding this can help reduce worry and encourage simple, effective care.
