President Donald Trump and senior officials were suddenly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C. after shots were reported inside the event, turning the annual gathering into an emergency security situation.
Among those rushed out were Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet members, and top officials including the acting attorney general, Todd Blanche. The Secret Service quickly moved Trump off the stage as security protocols activated and the ballroom was cleared.
Reports from the White House press pool said Trump had not immediately left the hotel after the evacuation, with one update noting, “the pool is still at the Hilton as of 8:56, which means POTUS hadn’t departed yet.” Officials later confirmed that Trump and other attendees were safe.
A source told CNN that “Trump is safe,” and administration officials also confirmed that Cabinet members were not harmed. Authorities detained the suspected shooter shortly after the incident, though details about motive and identity were still developing.
The event included numerous senior figures, such as Scott Bessent, Tulsi Gabbard, Sean Duffy, Karoline Leavitt, Steven Cheung, and Kash Patel. Lawmakers and witnesses described confusion as security moved quickly through the venue.
CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was nearby, said, “I did see the gunman on the ground after he started shooting,” describing how close the incident occurred to attendees inside the hotel.
Representative Nancy Mace also commented on the situation, saying, “we are praying for the safety of President Trump and the members of the administration… we are hearing reports the shooter is detained.”
As investigations continued, unrelated reporting noted a Justice Department memo outlining expanded federal execution methods, including lethal injection and firing squads, but this was separate from the dinner incident and ongoing security response.
