How To Spot Eyelash Mites

“You’ve probably never thought twice about what might be living on your eyelashes—but brace yourself.” Eyelash mites may sound disturbing, but they are actually very common. These tiny organisms, called Demodex mites, “live on almost everyone’s skin” and usually cause no problems unless they multiply too much.

“Demodex mites are microscopic parasites that live in our hair follicles and sebaceous (oil) glands.” There are two main types: “Demodex folliculorum – lives in hair follicles (including your lashes)” and “Demodex brevis – prefers oil glands.” Most of the time, they exist harmlessly without any symptoms or discomfort.

“Normally, they live peacefully alongside us.” However, issues can appear when their numbers grow due to factors like aging, weak immunity, or poor hygiene. This imbalance can lead to eyelid inflammation known as blepharitis, which may cause ongoing eye irritation and discomfort.

Common signs of an overgrowth include “Red, swollen, or itchy eyelids,” “A gritty or burning sensation in your eyes,” “Crusty residue at the base of your lashes,” “Thinning or loss of eyelashes,” and “Sensitivity to light.” These symptoms don’t always mean mites, but they are a signal to consider an eye check-up.

Keeping them under control usually comes down to hygiene. “Clean Your Face Daily.” “Make it a habit to wash your face every day—especially around your eyes. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to avoid irritating your skin.” Regular cleaning helps reduce buildup and lowers the chance of irritation or mite overgrowth.
