I was walking on the beach with my dog when he suddenly stopped and backed away from something in the sand.
“My dog never gets scared.”
His reaction immediately made me nervous too. In the sand was a swollen, strange-looking mass covered in bubbles and giving off a terrible smell. My dog barked and pulled away as if warning me to leave.
“For a moment, it genuinely felt like we’d found something dangerous.”
When I got home, I searched online to figure out what it was. After comparing photos, I finally found the answer: Sargassum seaweed.
What seemed alive and threatening was actually just a tangled mass of seaweed. Its small air-filled bladders made it look like it was moving or breathing, which made it even more unsettling.
“The fear faded, replaced by curiosity.”
In the end, there was nothing dangerous about it. It was simply nature appearing strange and unfamiliar. Sometimes the things that scare us most are only things we do not understand yet.
