“Thomson, best known for her high-profile interviews with politicians and celebrities, died on Sunday morning surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer, CTV News reported. She was 61.”
A veteran Canadian journalist, Thomson built a long and respected career in broadcast news, becoming a familiar face to viewers over more than three decades. She worked across major networks, including CTV News Toronto, where she served as both reporter and CTV News Channel anchor, and earlier at Global News from 1997 to 2003.
Her work also included a prominent role on the morning program Canada AM, where she helped shape daily news coverage for national audiences. Over the years, she became known for her ability to handle both breaking news and in-depth interviews with clarity and professionalism.
In recognition of her contributions, “Last October, Thomson was awarded the lifetime achievement award by the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada.” At the ceremony, then-RTDNA Canada president Lis Travers described her as “one of Canada’s most respected news personalities.”
Her career spanned major global and cultural events, including coverage of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. She also conducted interviews with widely known figures such as Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Donald Trump, and Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, reflecting the range of her reporting.
“Richard Gray, vice-president of news at Bell Media, said Thomson was a ‘trusted voice and a valued teammate to all of us at CTV News’ in a statement on Sunday.”
