If You Own Any of These Plastic Bowls, Doctors Say You Need to Throw Them Away

The convenience of storing and reheating food in plastic may come with hidden health risks, according to doctors and researchers. While many people believe plastic containers are safe for everyday use, studies suggest that chemicals such as BPA and phthalates can seep into food, even when plastic is used at temperatures considered safe. These substances are known as **”endocrine disruptors,”** meaning they can interfere with the body’s natural hormone system.

Hormones regulate many important functions, including growth, metabolism, reproduction, and immune health. Researchers warn that repeated exposure to these chemicals may increase the risk of altered puberty, reduced fertility, changes in fat storage, and disruptions to the immune and nervous systems. Because the effects develop gradually, they can be difficult to connect to a single source.

The concern is even greater for children. Scientists say young bodies are more sensitive to hormone-disrupting chemicals, and **”even small exposures during key developmental stages can influence long-term health and development.”** This makes limiting unnecessary exposure especially important during childhood.

Although more research continues, health experts agree that reducing contact with these chemicals is a practical step. One of the simplest ways to do that is by avoiding the habit of heating food in plastic containers, as repeated use may increase the chance of chemicals migrating into food.

Instead, experts recommend choosing safer alternatives such as glass, stainless steel, or ceramic for cooking, reheating, and storing meals. These small everyday changes can help reduce potential exposure and support long-term health for both adults and children.
