Little Johnny Gets an F in Math

Math often feels intimidating because students are expected to memorize rules instead of understanding why they work. Little Johnny believed math should follow logic, not just repetition. He listened carefully in class and answered questions honestly, always trying to make sense of what he was learning instead of simply repeating what he was told.

One day, Johnny came home and calmly told his father he had received an F in math. Surprised, his father asked what had happened. Johnny explained that the teacher asked, **“What’s three times two?”** and he correctly answered, **“Six.”** Moments later, the teacher asked, **“What’s two times three?”** Johnny thought the second question was unnecessary because the answer was still six.

Confused, Johnny’s father immediately replied, **“What’s the difference?”** Johnny smiled and answered, **“That’s what I said!”** At that moment, his father understood that Johnny hadn’t failed because he didn’t know multiplication. Instead, he questioned why he needed to give the same answer twice when the order of the numbers didn’t change the result.

The incident highlighted how classrooms sometimes reward memorization and strict routines over logical thinking. Johnny understood the concept perfectly, but his reasoning didn’t match what the teacher expected, leading to an unfair grade despite his correct understanding.

In the end, Johnny’s F wasn’t a sign of poor math skills. It showed the gap between genuine understanding and following instructions exactly as given. His simple response reminds us that curiosity and logical thinking are valuable, even when they challenge traditional teaching methods.
