Handshake Symbol On a Parking Space

Ontario Provincial Police has launched **Project Safe Trade** in Pembroke, Ontario, to make online marketplace transactions safer. The initiative introduces designated community safety zones marked with a handshake symbol outside the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Detachment, giving buyers and sellers a secure public place to meet instead of private homes or isolated parking lots. These locations are available 24/7 and require no appointment, helping reduce the risk of theft, fraud, and other crimes.

The program encourages anyone buying or selling online to use these visible public spaces for exchanging items and payments. As police explain, the goal is to provide **”a secure public location”** where transactions can take place more safely. By choosing these designated areas, people can avoid situations that may put them at unnecessary risk.

Police also remind the public to stay cautious throughout every transaction. If a buyer or seller refuses to meet at a designated public location without a valid reason, it could be a warning sign. Officers will not supervise sales, inspect merchandise, or settle disagreements, but they will respond if a criminal incident occurs. Their role is to offer **”a safer environment rather than supervise individual sales.”**

Even when a safe exchange zone is not available, simple precautions can make a big difference. Meet in a busy public place during daylight whenever possible, bring a trusted friend or family member, save all messages exchanged with the other person, and carefully inspect or test the item before completing the purchase. These practical steps can greatly reduce the chances of becoming a victim of fraud or theft.

Project Safe Trade highlights the importance of planning ahead and choosing secure meeting locations. By combining designated safety zones with smart personal precautions, buyers and sellers can enjoy safer, more confident online marketplace transactions while lowering the risks that sometimes come with meeting strangers in person.
