The Real Purpose of the Big Red Spheres Outside Target Stores

If you have ever visited a Target store, you have probably noticed the large red concrete spheres near the entrance. Many shoppers think they are simply decorative or places for children to sit, but their main purpose is much more practical. These familiar red balls were installed primarily with **safety in mind**.

The spheres are a type of protective barrier, often referred to as **bollards**. Their purpose is to create a physical barrier between vehicles and people near the entrance. If a driver accidentally loses control, presses the accelerator instead of the brake, or makes another driving mistake, the heavy concrete spheres can help prevent the vehicle from reaching pedestrians or the building.

Their round shape also has practical benefits. Unlike barriers with sharp corners, spheres are less likely to cause accidental injuries to pedestrians. Their large size makes them easy for drivers to see, while their heavy concrete construction helps keep them firmly in place.

The bright red color is also part of the design. It closely matches Target’s famous bullseye logo, creating a strong connection between the store’s safety features and its branding. Over time, the spheres have become more than safety barriers. Families sometimes use them as meeting points, while children enjoy sitting on them and shoppers include them in photos.

Similar protective barriers are used outside airports, stadiums, government buildings, and shopping centers. Target’s version simply combines safety with branding in a memorable way. What may look like a simple decoration is actually a carefully planned feature designed to help protect shoppers while becoming an instantly recognizable part of the Target experience.
