Stop Throwing Out Silica Gel Packets

Those tiny silica gel packets found in shoe boxes, bags, and electronics may seem like useless packaging, but they can actually be helpful around the house. They absorb moisture, making them useful for protecting everyday items from dampness. The packets are safe to handle, but they should never be eaten. The original warning still applies: **“DO NOT EAT” and “THROW AWAY.”** Clear silica gel beads are generally nontoxic, while colored packets may contain chemicals that should not be used around the home.

One of the easiest uses is protecting items from moisture. If a phone gets wet, place it in a sealed bag with several silica packets and leave it overnight to absorb moisture. Packets can also be placed inside shoes and boots to reduce dampness, odors, and the chance of mold. A few packets in a bag with a wet swimsuit can help remove moisture while you’re traveling home.

Silica gel can also help preserve household items. Place packets near books to fight musty smells, behind framed photographs to reduce moisture damage, or inside containers holding important keepsakes. They can even help reduce condensation and fog on car windows by absorbing some of the moisture inside the vehicle.

For creative uses, silica gel is useful for drying flowers while helping them keep their shape and appearance. Gardeners can also store seeds with a packet or two to help keep them dry until planting season. Even carved pumpkins can benefit from silica packets, which may help limit moisture and mold.

Instead of immediately throwing the packets away, keep the dry ones in an airtight container for future use. If they become saturated, some types can be dried and reused according to the manufacturer’s instructions. With a little creativity, these small packets can become surprisingly useful household helpers.
