How Long Should You Boil Corn on the Cob

Fresh corn on the cob is a summer favorite, but many people make one simple mistake: cooking it for too long. Boiling corn for 15 or 20 minutes can leave the kernels chewy, tough, and less sweet. The good news is that perfect corn takes only a few minutes to cook. The article explains that “Perfect corn on the cob takes much less time to cook than most people think.”

Freshness also makes a major difference. After corn is harvested, its natural sugars gradually turn into starch, which is why freshly picked corn usually tastes sweeter. Look for ears with bright green husks, slightly damp leaves, soft silk, and firm, full kernels. Avoid corn with dry husks, black or moldy silk, soft spots, or missing kernels.

To cook it, first remove the husks and silk, then bring a large pot of water to a full rolling boil. Add the corn only after the water is boiling. Very fresh corn usually needs just **4–5 minutes**, while regular fresh corn takes **6–7 minutes**. Older or larger ears may need up to **8 minutes**, but cooking much longer can make the kernels firmer and less juicy.

When the corn is ready, remove it with tongs and serve immediately while it is hot and juicy. You can keep it simple with butter and salt or add garlic butter, black pepper, Parmesan, chili powder, herbs, lime, or other favorite toppings. The article notes that “Sometimes the simplest recipes really are the best.”

Ultimately, the secret to delicious corn is simple: choose fresh ears, use boiling water, and watch the cooking time carefully. For most corn, **4–7 minutes is enough** to produce tender, sweet, juicy kernels without overcooking them.
