How To Pick The Best Fruits At The Grocery Store ..

Buying fresh fruit can feel like a gamble. A watermelon may look perfect on the outside but turn out disappointing once you cut it open. The good news is that a few simple signs can help you choose a better one. Instead of picking the biggest or shiniest melon, pay attention to its color, markings, and stem.

One of the most useful clues is the field spot—the pale patch where the watermelon rested on the ground while growing. A creamy or golden-yellow spot is generally a good sign, while a very white spot may suggest it was picked before reaching its best ripeness. As the article explains, “The more golden, or creamy-yellow that spot is, the better.” A deeper yellow-orange color can also indicate that the melon had plenty of time to ripen in the sun.

Another feature worth checking is the brown, web-like pattern on the skin. Although it may look strange, this scarring is considered a positive sign because it can indicate that the flower received plenty of pollination. The article notes, “More webbing means more pollination, which equals more sweetness?” While this idea is not presented as proven science, many people use it as another clue when choosing a melon.

The shape of the watermelon is another traditional tip. Rounder melons are sometimes called “girls” and are believed to be sweeter, while longer, oval-shaped melons are thought to contain more water. Whether or not this rule is reliable, it remains a popular piece of advice among experienced shoppers.

Finally, check the stem. A green stem may mean the watermelon was picked too early, while a brown, dry stem suggests it had more time to mature on the vine. In the end, don’t simply choose the largest melon. Look for the right size, a creamy-yellow field spot, some webbing, and a dried stem for a better chance of bringing home a sweet, ripe watermelon.
