I just got home from the store

Have you ever opened your refrigerator and noticed a small patch of mold on your cheddar cheese? Your first reaction might be to throw the entire block away, but that may not always be necessary. Cheddar is a hard, dense cheese, which means mold often has difficulty spreading deeply through it. If the mold is limited to one small area and the cheese otherwise looks and smells normal, the affected part can sometimes be removed safely.

The important thing is not to simply scrape the mold from the surface. Instead, use a clean knife and cut away the moldy section, including at least an inch around and beneath it. This helps remove any mold that may have reached below the visible surface. As the article explains, **“mold on cheddar does not always mean you have to throw away the entire block.”** After cutting, avoid touching the clean portion with the part of the knife that contacted the mold.

There are situations when the safest choice is to throw the cheese away completely. If you see several moldy areas, notice unusual colors such as black, pink, or orange, or the cheese has become slimy or developed a strong unpleasant smell, don’t take the risk. Mold is also more concerning with soft cheeses because it can spread through them more easily.

Proper storage can help keep cheddar fresh for longer. Wrap the cheese in wax or parchment paper and store it in the refrigerator, preferably in a cool area. Remember, **“when the cheese looks or smells suspicious, it’s safer to throw it away.”** When in doubt, protecting your health is more important than saving a piece of cheese.
