One Thing You Should Definitely Have in Your Kitchen

Every kitchen has its essentials, but one important item is often forgotten: a **fire extinguisher**. Cooking fires can start from overheated oil, an unattended pan, or a simple moment of distraction, and they can spread quickly. As the original article says, **“That’s why a fire extinguisher isn’t something you should buy after an accident. It’s something you want available before you ever need it.”**

Not all extinguishers are suitable for every fire. For kitchens, choose one designed for cooking-related hazards and always check its label and instructions. In the United States, **Class K** extinguishers are specifically designed for fires involving cooking oils and fats. The extinguisher should be easy to see and reach, but kept away from the stove so you don’t have to move toward flames to grab it.

One rule is especially important: **“Never throw water onto a grease or cooking-oil fire.”** Water can make burning oil splatter and spread the flames rapidly. If a small pan fire occurs, turn off the heat only if it is safe, then cover the pan with a metal lid or baking sheet. Never carry the burning pan. If the flames continue, evacuate and call emergency services.

A fire extinguisher also needs regular checks. Make sure it remains in its proper place, has no visible damage or leaks, and that its pressure indicator, safety pin, seal, and expiration or service date are acceptable. Everyone in the home should know where it is and understand the basic PASS method: **“P — Pull the safety pin. A — Aim the nozzle at the base of the flames. S — Squeeze the handle. S — Sweep the nozzle from side to side.”**

Most importantly, never risk your life trying to fight a spreading fire. If flames are growing, smoke is heavy, or your escape route is blocked, get outside immediately and call emergency services. A fire extinguisher is only one part of kitchen safety—working smoke alarms and a clear emergency plan are just as important. **Your safety always comes first.**
