Just one leaf of this plant is worth a gold mine!

Many people remove Santa Lucía herb from their gardens without a second thought, believing it is simply an unwanted weed. However, this small wild plant has been used in traditional herbal practices for generations. It can grow in damp soil, flowerpots, backyards, and along sidewalks. The plant is recognized by its green leaves, tiny flowers, and the milky white liquid released when its stem is cut.

Known scientifically as *Euphorbia hirta*, it is sometimes called asthma-plant because of its traditional connection to respiratory health. Folk medicine has associated it with anti-inflammatory, expectorant, digestive, and diuretic properties. Traditionally, people have prepared it as a tea to support digestion, ease bloating and stomach discomfort, and help with coughs or mild respiratory congestion. It has also been used traditionally for joint discomfort and urinary health.

One of its most popular uses is as a digestive tea. Some people drink an infusion after meals to reduce heaviness and support digestion. Others use it during colds because it is traditionally believed to help loosen mucus and soothe irritation in the respiratory system. Its mild diuretic reputation has also made it popular in natural wellness routines focused on fluid balance.

Making the tea is simple: chopped leaves, flowers, and stems are commonly steeped in hot water for several minutes before being strained. However, natural does not automatically mean safe. Pregnant or breastfeeding people, young children, and those with chronic health conditions should consult a healthcare professional before using herbal remedies regularly.

Proper identification is also important because wild plants can be confused with harmful species. Plants collected near polluted roads or contaminated soil should be avoided. While scientific evidence for many traditional claims remains limited, Santa Lucía herb continues to attract interest as part of long-standing herbal traditions.
