Should You Strip the Bed or Make It Before Leaving as a Houseguest?

Staying in someone else’s home can raise a simple etiquette question: what should you do with the bed before leaving? There is no universal rule. Some hosts prefer to remove the sheets themselves, while others appreciate having the used bedding stripped and ready for laundry. The safest choice is to consider the host’s routine and any instructions they have given you. If you are unsure, simply ask, “Would you like me to strip the bed?” This avoids confusion and shows respect for their home.

If you are staying with family or close friends, straightening the blankets, collecting your belongings, and leaving the room tidy is usually enough unless they request something different. If you are staying with someone you do not know well, such as a colleague or a friend of a friend, it is especially considerate to leave the room neat and ask about the bedding. If you remove the sheets, place them somewhere appropriate rather than leaving them on the floor. For longer stays, offering to help with laundry or bedding can also be a thoughtful gesture.

Hotels and vacation rentals are different because housekeeping or property staff normally handle the cleaning. In these situations, follow the checkout instructions provided by the property instead of assuming you should make the bed or remove the sheets. Some accommodations may specifically ask guests to leave bedding untouched, while others may have different procedures.

Before leaving, take a moment to check the bed carefully. Chargers, jewelry, socks, books, headphones, wallets, and other small items can easily become hidden beneath blankets or pillows. A quick inspection can prevent you from discovering later that something important was left behind.

Ultimately, being a considerate guest is more important than following one strict bedding rule. “A simple conversation is better than guessing.” Make the room reasonably tidy, follow the host’s instructions, and ask when you are uncertain. Whether you make the bed or strip it matters far less than showing appreciation for the hospitality you received.
