The mountain rescue showdown

A vintage optical illusion is challenging viewers to find a third mountaineer hidden inside a dramatic mountain scene. At first glance, two climbers are easy to see. One is safely standing on a rocky ledge while pulling on a rope, and the other is hanging below, appearing to be in danger. But the illustration contains another figure that is much harder to notice.

The puzzle’s message says, “Old age is no threat if you can spot the third mountaineer!” The trick is to stop concentrating on the two obvious climbers and instead examine the surrounding rocks. The cliffs, shadows, and unusual shapes contain the hidden image, making the puzzle a test of both observation and perception.

The hidden figure is created through a classic visual technique known as pareidolia, where the brain recognizes familiar shapes, such as faces or people, within random patterns. To find it, carefully scan the rocky areas around and above the two visible climbers. Instead of searching for another complete person, look for shapes that resemble facial features.

The key is to notice how the rock formations come together. Some cracks and shadows appear to create eyes, while the curves of the rocks can suggest a nose and mouth. Looking at the illustration from a different angle may also make the hidden shape easier to recognize.

The answer is a large facial profile formed naturally by the rocks in the mountain. Once you notice the eyes, nose, and mouth within the cliff, the hidden mountaineer becomes much easier to see. Did you spot the third climber in under 10 seconds, or did the mountain fool you?
