10 Things You Shouldn’t Be Storing on Your Kitchen Countertop

When I first organized my kitchen, I thought keeping everything on the countertops would make cooking easier. Instead, the counters became crowded and difficult to clean. Removing a few unnecessary items can create more workspace and make the entire kitchen feel calmer and more organized.

Bread and knives are two items that do not need to stay on the counter. Bread can dry out or develop mold depending on temperature and humidity, so a bread box, pantry, or freezer may be a better choice. Knife blocks also take up valuable space and can collect crumbs and grease. A magnetic strip or drawer can keep knives organized without using countertop space.

Small appliances such as toasters, mixers, and air fryers can also be stored away when they are not used every day. Keep only frequently used appliances within easy reach. Cutting boards can be stored upright in a cabinet, while cookbooks can go on a shelf to protect them from spills and splashes.

Some foods also benefit from being kept away from the counter. Certain fruits and vegetables can spoil or ripen too quickly, while potatoes can sprout when exposed to light. Spices should be protected from heat and sunlight, and coffee beans should be kept in an airtight, opaque container. Pet food should also be stored in an airtight container, with bowls kept in a designated area.

Finally, avoid turning your kitchen counter into a storage area for mail, receipts, and paperwork. Create a separate place for these items instead. Clearing unnecessary objects from your counters can give you more room to prepare food, reduce visual clutter, and make your kitchen feel cleaner and easier to use.
