Five Years Of Fake Business Dinners And Aspen Weekends, And I Never Once Asked Who Was Watching Me Do It

Delphine had discovered her husband’s affair with Seraphina, but that was only the beginning. While investigating his secret life, she uncovered five years of financial misconduct. He had been using client entertainment accounts to pay for jewelry, flights, a penthouse, memberships, and other luxuries connected to the affair. Instead of confronting him immediately, Delphine spent four months quietly collecting evidence and sent it to both his lawyer and managing partner.

Her husband’s assistant, Desmond, eventually chose to help Delphine. After years of arranging and covering up questionable expenses, he gave her account records, flight details, and receipts. He had watched Delphine remain supportive while her husband betrayed her, and he could no longer protect the deception. Together, the evidence made it difficult for the narrator to deny what he had done or explain it away.

The consequences came quickly. His partners removed him from the firm while the financial investigation continued. His expensive lifestyle disappeared, including the penthouse and memberships he had enjoyed. He also learned that the brownstone he had considered his home actually belonged to Delphine and had been purchased with money from her family. Seraphina left as well, showing that their relationship had been closely tied to the wealthy and successful life he could provide.

Delphine later gave birth to their son, but the narrator was not there. Under their court arrangement, he could see his child only according to a schedule, something he deeply regretted. He understood that Delphine had never needed to scream or publicly shame him. She simply gathered the truth and placed it where nobody could ignore it. Her silence had never meant that she was unaware.

In the end, he realized how completely he had misunderstood Delphine. He had mistaken her kindness for blindness and her patience for permission to betray her. While he believed his lies were hidden, the people around him had seen her loyalty and generosity clearly. He had sacrificed the person who truly knew him for someone who had mainly been drawn to his money and status.
