Barbara, Brandon’s mother, had never accepted Lisa as part of their family. She often called Lisa “another man’s responsibility” and suggested Brandon should save his money for his “own children.” The bride tried to ignore the comments, hoping Barbara would eventually accept them. But on the wedding morning, Barbara offered to help with the bride’s long train, secretly sewing eight tiny fabric suitcases onto it. The largest one had Lisa’s name on it, making a cruel statement about the child being “baggage” brought into the marriage.

When the doors opened, everyone noticed the strange suitcases on the dress. Lisa looked at her mother and quietly asked, “Mom, am I baggage?” The bride knelt beside her and answered, “You are the best thing that ever happened to me.” Brandon then walked away from the altar for five minutes, leaving everyone wondering what he would do. Brandon also discovered a drawing of their family. The word GRANDMA had been crossed out, with “NO” written beside it. Lisa explained that Barbara had told her she would never be her real grandmother and that only Brandon’s future biological children would truly matter. The room became silent.

Brandon turned to his mother and said, “Lisa is my daughter,” adding that having more children someday would never make Lisa less his child. He gave Barbara a choice: accept all of them or leave. Barbara walked out.
