My Wife Abandoned Our Six Daughters for Her Rich Boss

For fifteen years, I kept a white box filled with everything Maya had rejected: birthday invitations, school photos, letters, and cards from our six daughters. She had left us for another man, leaving me to raise the girls alone. I never kept the box for revenge. I kept it because someday, my daughters might ask whether I had tried. Three days before Adele’s wedding, Maya suddenly announced she was coming and said she wanted to look good in front of her “new family.” Adele understood immediately and asked for the box. “Let her come,” she said.

On the wedding morning, the white box was placed beside the gift table. I hoped it would remain closed, but during the reception Maya approached the microphone and described herself as a loving mother who had been separated from her daughters. She suggested that other people had kept her away. Adele then stood and said, “Actually, Mom, I have something for you.”

Two of her sisters carried the box to Maya. Inside were fifteen years of returned letters, photographs, birthday invitations, and cards. Adele held up a childhood card from Piper that said, “Please come to my birthday, Mom.” She then showed Shannon’s kindergarten photograph. “Dad sent this to you,” she said. “You returned it unopened.”

Maya blamed me, claiming I had turned the girls against her. Adele calmly answered, “He protected your name long after you stopped protecting us.” She reminded Maya that she had come worried about how she would look in front of her new family, while the box showed the family she had left behind.

I finally stood and told the truth. “I begged you to call them. I begged you to send one card you actually meant. They were six little girls, not something you could leave behind.” Adele took my hand, and for the first time in fifteen years, I felt no need to defend myself. The truth was finally speaking for me.
