WHY MY NEIGHBOR WANTED CHAIRS WITH HOLES

My elderly neighbor, Mr. Dalen, once asked me to find two or three plastic lawn chairs with holes in the seats. I couldn’t find the exact kind, so I brought him regular white patio chairs instead. He thanked me, but his quiet disappointment was obvious. The next day, I offered to return them and keep searching. That was when he explained why those particular chairs mattered so much.

Dalen told me that he and his late wife, Nadine, used to sit outside together during rainy days, drinking coffee and listening to the drops. The holes in the chairs allowed the rain to drain away, so they never had to sit in puddles. “These ones’ll pool,” he said gently, looking at the solid chairs. I realized then that he wasn’t asking for a certain type of furniture. He was trying to recreate a small tradition that made him feel close to his wife.

A few days later, I noticed his lawn was unmowed and his mailbox was overflowing. A wellness check revealed that he had fainted from dehydration and exhaustion. Thankfully, he was okay, but while he recovered, I continued searching. Eventually, I found the exact chairs at a small hardware store two counties away and brought them home for him.

When Dalen returned from the hospital and saw the chairs waiting in his yard, he stopped without saying a word. He simply sat down as a light drizzle began, closing his eyes as though Nadine were still beside him. I joined him with a cup of coffee, and we sat quietly together in the rain.

That afternoon reminded me that ordinary objects can carry extraordinary memories. The chairs were never really about plastic or comfort. They represented love, loss, and a ritual shared with someone who was gone. Sometimes a memory lives in a song, a scent, or a photograph. For Dalen, it lived in a simple chair that let the rain fall through.
