I Found a Strange Red Growth in My Garden — Here’s What I Learned

It started as an ordinary morning in the garden. While checking the plants and watering flowers, I noticed a small reddish growth near one of the flowerbeds. Its unusual shape and strong odor immediately caught my attention. I wondered if an animal had left something behind, but it looked more like something growing directly from the soil. Rather than touching it, I took a few photographs and began searching for an explanation.

The search quickly introduced me to the surprising variety of fungi found in gardens. Some fungi look nothing like the familiar mushrooms people expect, and certain species can have unusual colors, textures, shapes, and smells. Eventually, I learned that some fungi produce strong odors for a specific biological reason. “Certain fungi produce strong odors that can attract insects.” Flies and other insects may be attracted to these smells because they resemble decaying organic material, helping the fungus spread its reproductive material.

The discovery also changed the way I looked at my garden. Beneath the flowers, grass, and soil is a busy ecosystem filled with fungi, microorganisms, insects, earthworms, and plant interactions that are mostly invisible. The strange red growth was simply one small example of the activity happening around us every day.

Finding something unfamiliar outdoors is also a reminder to be careful. It is better not to touch or eat an unknown mushroom or plant. Taking photographs from different angles and checking reliable gardening, botanical, or university resources can help with identification. If children or pets are nearby, keeping them away from the unknown growth is also sensible until you know what it is.

Looking back, the experience was less frightening than fascinating. What first seemed mysterious turned out to be another example of nature’s incredible variety. “Unusual doesn’t automatically mean dangerous.” Sometimes a strange object in the garden is not a problem at all, but simply a small part of the natural world that you have finally noticed.
