Warning Signs of Diabetes That May Show Up at Night

Some early signs of diabetes may become noticeable during the night, when changes in blood sugar can affect sleep and normal body functions. One common warning sign is frequent urination. Waking several times to use the bathroom can happen when high blood sugar causes the kidneys to remove excess glucose through urine, which also increases fluid loss.

Night sweats can also occur, particularly when blood sugar falls too low during sleep. This may trigger sweating, a rapid heartbeat, shakiness, or sudden awakening. Some people may also experience nighttime hunger, anxiety, confusion, or a feeling that their heart is racing. These symptoms can interfere with sleep and may be related to changes in blood sugar levels.

Other nighttime symptoms can include tingling, burning, or “pins and needles” in the legs or feet. These sensations may be associated with nerve problems linked to prolonged high blood sugar. Sleep disturbances, including loud snoring or pauses in breathing, can also occur more often in people with type 2 diabetes, while excessive thirst and waking with a dry mouth may result from dehydration caused by frequent urination.

Poor-quality sleep and persistent tiredness can be additional clues that something may be wrong. However, these symptoms can have many possible causes and do not automatically mean someone has diabetes. If several of them occur regularly, especially together, speaking with a healthcare professional and getting a blood sugar test can help determine the cause. Early detection can allow diabetes to be managed before complications develop.
