This is the first time I’m hearing of this

It began as pure practicality: a way to hang a shirt without wrecking the collar or creasing the fabric. When GANT popularized the “locker loop” in the 1960s, it solved a real problem for students cramming their clothes into gym lockers with no hangers. Soon, though, this simple loop migrated from utility to identity, woven into the image of Ivy League polish and preppy aspiration.

On some campuses, it even turned into a quiet social signal. A neatly intact loop might suggest you were available; a torn-off one, that your heart was already claimed. The meaning shifted by school and region, but the message was always intimate, almost secret. Today, designers keep the loop for drying, for aesthetics, or purely for tradition. It’s a reminder that even the smallest stitch can carry history, hint at status, and whisper private stories about the person wearing it.
