The Unusual Toilet Design That Often Surprises Travelers — And the Practical Reason Behind It

For many travelers, bathrooms in other countries can reveal surprising differences. One unusual design found in parts of Europe is the “shelf toilet,” which looks very different from the modern toilets most people use today. Instead of waste dropping directly into water, the bowl has a flat platform where it remains visible before being flushed. Although the design may seem strange or outdated, it was created for a practical reason.

The flat platform allowed people to examine their waste before flushing. In the past, medical testing was not as widely available as it is today, so visible changes could sometimes provide useful clues about a person’s health. Blood, unusual colors, parasites, or changes in consistency could be noticed more easily. As the article explains, “What appeared in the bathroom could sometimes provide an important clue.” These observations could alert someone that something was different and might need further attention.

The design could also be useful to doctors trying to understand a patient’s condition. While examining stool was never a replacement for proper medical testing, it provided another source of information at a time when modern diagnostic tools were limited. Something as ordinary as using the bathroom could therefore give people an opportunity to notice changes happening inside the body.

Over time, however, bathroom priorities changed. Modern plumbing allowed waste to disappear immediately, while newer designs focused more on cleanliness, convenience, reducing odors, and preventing splashing. Quickly flushing waste away became more practical for everyday life, making the older shelf-style design less attractive to many people.

Even though these toilets may look unusual today, their design was not simply a strange construction choice. It reflected an earlier period when people had fewer medical resources and relied more heavily on visible signs of health. What now seems like an outdated toilet design once served a surprisingly practical purpose.
