What Dad Found Under The Pool, And The Reason He Never Told Me Until The Morning It Was Already Over

Dad discovered that the swimming pool’s concrete foundation, built in 1987, crossed the original property line by eighteen inches. Two iron boundary markers dating back to 1962 had been buried beneath the concrete, proving that part of the pool stood on land that legally belonged to someone else.

The neighboring property belonged to an elderly woman named Loretta, who had inherited it from her father. Although the land had remained undeveloped for decades, she had never sold it or given anyone permission to use it. Three previous homeowners had ignored the encroachment, and Loretta had even filed a complaint in 1994 that led nowhere.

When Dad contacted her, Loretta drove four hours with a folder of documents she had carefully preserved for years. Police were already present because Dad had reported the problem and requested a property line inspection. During their investigation, officers also discovered that Aldric had never obtained the necessary permits to build the pool, creating an additional building code violation.

Aldric paid the $8,400 within forty-eight hours. His attorney contacted Dad, while Coralie never called at all. Dad later explained that he had kept his discovery secret for nine days because he wanted to verify the boundary markers and protect me from workplace pressure. He knew Coralie might threaten my job, and he wanted me to be genuinely surprised when everything came together.

I left Aldric’s employment the following week. He had not fired me, but I could no longer work for someone who used my livelihood as leverage against my family. Dad repaired the pool, collected his money, and contacted Loretta to give her the information she had needed for thirty years. **He charged her nothing for the call.**
