A Farm Supply Manager Refused to Sell My 74-Year-Old Mom the Last Bags of Feed, Then She Wrote Six Numbers on His Receipt

Our family had farmed near Redfield for three generations, and Mom continued to run everything after Dad died eight years earlier. When a storm threatened our farm, we went to Dawson Farm Supply to buy twenty bags of cattle feed. But manager Travis Dawson refused to sell them because Prairie Ridge, a commercial company, had offered more money. Despite knowing our situation, he told his employee to put the bags back. “Business is business,” he said. Mom stayed calm and wrote six numbers on a receipt.

When Travis saw the numbers, his face turned pale. He rushed to his office and returned with an old ledger belonging to his late father, Hank. It showed that Hank owed our parents $38,500. Back in 1993, devastating floods had nearly destroyed his store, and his wife was seriously ill. To save his business, my parents had sold Dad’s beloved prize bull and forty valuable cows to help him recover.

Hank had written a promise beside the debt: his family must always help the Carters when they needed it. Travis was never supposed to turn us away. Overwhelmed by his father’s words, he broke down. Mom explained that she had not come to collect the money. She only wanted to know whether Hank had raised his son with the same values.

When Prairie Ridge threatened Travis with financial ruin, he made his choice. He canceled the company’s account and ordered our twenty bags of feed to be loaded. That evening, he drove through dangerous icy roads to our farm, bringing a generator and extra feed to help us survive the storm.

News of his actions spread throughout town, and local farmers returned to support his store. Travis revived his father’s tradition of helping struggling families and established a fund for those in need. Months later, Mom marked the old debt “Paid in full.” The money had never been the real issue. Sometimes, people lose sight of their values, and all they need is someone who cares enough to remind them.
