I woke up and decided to make fried eggs.

I was making breakfast when I noticed a twisted white strand floating inside an egg. Worried it might be something dangerous, I checked the rest of the carton, but finding nothing unusual only made me more curious. Before throwing the eggs away, I searched for an explanation and discovered that the strange-looking strand was actually a normal part of an egg.

The unusual white cord is called the **chalaza**. Made mostly of protein, it helps keep the yolk centered inside the egg, acting like a tiny anchor on either side. Although it might look unpleasant at first, the chalaza is completely edible and is not a parasite or a sign that the egg has gone bad.

These strands can be easier to notice in fresh eggs, and their appearance varies from one egg to another. That is why you might spot a thick, twisted strand in one egg but barely notice it in the next. There is usually no reason to remove it before cooking, although some people prefer to do so when preparing delicate recipes that require a particularly smooth texture.

However, **the presence of a chalaza does not automatically mean an egg is safe to eat.** Eggs should be stored properly in the refrigerator, handled carefully, and cooked thoroughly. If an egg has a cracked shell or an unpleasant smell, it is best to discard it rather than risk eating it.

What initially looked like something alarming turned out to be a natural part of the egg. Instead of throwing away perfectly good breakfast ingredients, I learned to recognize the harmless white strand. Next time I crack an egg and see that twisted cord, I will know exactly what it is—and there will be no need to panic.
